Summary:
- When Yuuya was a wee boy, he was gifted a pendulum necklace from his father, whom he was very close to. He treasured it deeply, and wore it every day, up to and including the present.
- When Yuuya was 11 years old, his father mysteriously disappeared, right before a major duel to defend his championship, and has not been heard from since. His father was branded a coward, and Yuuya was severely bullied, with people calling him 'the son of a coward'. As a result, Yuuya created a 'class clown' sort of persona, and makes fun of himself before someone else can, to keep himself from getting hurt, though his true personality still showed through around people he's close to.
- At the beginning of the series, Yuuya is offered a rematch with Strong Ishijima, the opponent his father would have faced in his match 3 years ago, which he reluctantly agrees to, in hopes that it'll restore his father's good name. He holds his own for a while, but ultimately is saved by the Pendulum Cards that appear in his hand by magic. This is significant because Pendulum Summoning is a brand new type of card, and to the public, it appears as though Yuuya invented it himself.
- Because of the match, Yuuya drops the clown persona and is rocketed into the public eye. It is revealed that Yuuya has a gap in his memory from the duel; from the point the Pendulum Cards appeared, to the point where he won the duel, Yuuya doesn't remember anything, and has no idea where the Pendulum Cards came from.
- As a result of Yuuya acquiring Pendulum Cards, the company LDS, a large duel school who holds a monopoly on all other summoning types, turns their attention to Yuuya. They first send out Shingo Sawatari to steal them, but when that fails, set out to challenge Yuuya's dueling school for both the school and Yuuya's Pendulum Cards.
- The two schools have a 3 on 3 match, ending in one win, one loss, and a draw, and a tiebreaker is called. LDS's young CEO, Reiji Akaba, faces Yuuya in a match, but is called away, and conceeds to Yuuya's school.
- At this point, the Championship matches for school-age children is approaching. Yuuya is set to enter the Junior Youth rank, for kids 12-15, but needs a 60% win rate to qualify. Yuuya only has a 50% win rate, and thus has to win four more matches in order to enter. Each duel he participates in teaches Yuuya a different lesson and helps him learn more about himself and his Pendulum Cards. After winning his fourth match, against his best friend Noboru Gongenzaka, he is able to enter the tournament.
- Yuuya's first duel is a rematch against Shingo Sawatari, which Yuuya pulls off with flying colors and advances to the next phase, before watching his friend Sora Shiun'in in his own duel against a mysterious duelist from LDS, Shun Kurosaki, where it is revealed that Sora is from a different dimension, and aims to wipe Shun out for being his enemy. Sora loses, and is badly hurt, but his true personality is revealed to be more vicious than what he'd shown so far.
- Sora later escapes the hospital, and goes to chase after what he called 'XYZ Remnant Scum', prompting Yuuya to chase after him. Yuuya comes across him dueling a boy who looks exactly like Yuuya, a boy called Yuuto who had previously been seen interacting with Yuuya's friend Yuzu Hiragi. Sora is sucked back into his own dimension, for having revealed his purpose when he wasn't supposed to, leaving Yuuya to deal with Yuuto alone. Soon after, a third Yuuya doppelganger arrives on a motorcycle, a boy named Yuugo.
- Yuuya has no choice but to watch the two duel, where both Yuuto and Yuugo seem to become possessed by something that puts them into a berserker state. Yuuya manages to talk Yuuto down from it, but Yuugo is still crazed, and makes a final attack; Yuuto pushes Yuuya out of the way, and takes the hit to save him. Yuuto giveshis favorite card to Yuuya to take care of, asking him to make people smile with it. Yuuto disappears, and his soul merges with Yuuya's, who then passes out.
- Two days later, Yuuya wakes and learns from Yuzu that there are four different dimensions, one for each of the types of summoning; Standard (theirs), Fusion (Sora's), Syncro (Yuugo's), and XYZ (Yuuto's). On top of that, the final match of the first round is that day.
- Upon heading to the stadium, he finds his opponent for the second round will be Isao Kachidoki, who's notorious for using brutal physical attacks. Yuuya tries his best to play fair and bring smiles to everyone like he promised, but Kachidoki's methods drive him to snap and enters his own berserker state. He coldly defeats Kachidoki, but Yuuya snaps out of it soon after, remembering nothing that happened while possessed.
- The next phase of the tournament is a Battle Royal, where the 16 qualifying Junior Youth duelists are set loose in the city to duel. Yuuya is immediately assaulted by two duelists from the same school as Kachidoki, wanting revenge, but Yuuya is helped out by Dennis Macfield, an exchange student. Yuuya and Dennis win the duel, and go their separate ways.
- Yuuya wanders to a different area of the city, and finds that Sora has returned with reinforcements known as the Obelisk Force. Before he can chase Sora, Yuuya watches the Obelisk Force turn three duelists into cards, and enters berserk mode again to defeat them. This time he does not re-awaken upon the end of the duel, and is restrained by Gongenzaka.
- With the help of a few others, Gongenzaka holds Yuuya down until he calms and passes out from the exhaustion. He awakens again a few hours later, with Yuuto's memories in his head, and oblivious to what had occurred.
Sakaki Yuuya is a silly, energetic middle schooler with a love of dueling and performing. His sweet disposition and cheerful attitude tends to endear him to people quickly, and his biggest dream is to make his audience smile with his special brand of 'Entertainment Dueling'. He has a strong belief that dueling should be used to make people happy, and not be used for nefarious purposes, such as war. While Yuuya isn't good at school subjects, such as science or math, he's shown to be very clever and skilled at dueling, which he learned from his father.
However, behind that, Yuuya is actually quite shy, and it's rather easy to make him cry. He dislikes publicity and being the center of attention (unless he put himself there), and has low self confidence. Due to his father's disappearance when he was 11, Yuuya was bullied mercilessly and had only a few friends, leading to him becoming a bit of a shrinking violet, before developing a clown persona to hide his feelings. Since he was young, Yuuya wore goggles, which he would pull down over his eyes whenever he was feeling upset or embarrassed, which could be a metaphor for the masks he hides behind.
Which isn't to say his happy personality is a lie! Since the beginning of the series, Yuuya's gone through a lot of challenges and growth, making him a bit more confident in his abilities and able to stand up for himself. He holds his friends in high priority, and will more easily drop his masks around his friends. His masks are almost like exaggerated versions of his true self. Really, he is a bit of a jokester, a little childish, an empathetic person, and is an excellent actor to boot. He's patient with others, having a high tolerance for nonsense, such as his mother's penchant for adopting pets, but that patience does have a limit, and he will quickly become quietly exasperated with the situation. He cares deeply about people, and hates the idea of hurting someone else. While he may be shy, he will speak up about something he feels strongly about.
Yuuya also has an ability called Berserk Mode (as named by the fandom). Unwillingly, Yuuya will occasionally be pulled into a ruthless, cold state, usually brought on by extreme bouts of anger (either from himself or Yuuto, who's soul is merged with his), or when something extremely unjust is performed by someone else. This state is extremely powerful, and has not been beaten yet, but cannot be controlled by Yuuya, and when he snaps out of it, he doesn't remember anything that occurred while under the influence. It's been implied that the Berserk Mode is perhaps the influence of an inner darkness, separate from his soul, controlling Yuuya.
Gem Considerations: The stone I've chosen for Yuuya is Aquamarine. It represents courage and calmness, something Yuuya has great potential for, but perhaps needs a bit of a push with, leaving him with a goal to live up to. It's also a stone of protection, guarding against stress and darkness.
Aquamarine also has the added bonus of looking a lot like the pendulum that Yuuya often wears as a necklace (which he will not have upon arrival), serving almost as a replacement for it. It will also be located on the spot on his chest where the necklace would usually fall.

Invisibility is exactly what it sounds like. Yuuya can turn himself invisible, including his clothes and anything he's carrying, but cannot extend it to other people or larger objects. Hydrokinesis is also obvious; he'll be able to manipulate water to his advantage (though, at this time, he'll probably default to a water shield).
Dimensional Scream is the most complicated. It's a type of precognition, where he gets visions of the future, and the closer his proximity is to an object pertaining to the vision, the stronger the vision becomes (ex; Touching the object brings clear visions, but being down the hall from it only brings vague flashes and audio clips). This ability works with people as well, but he cannot trigger it on his own.
